The literary societies at Centre College began with the formation in 1828 of the Chamberlain Philosophical and Literary Society, named in honor of the College's first President, Rev. Jeremiah Chamberlain. Ormond Beatty was born in 1815, and spent nearly sixty years of his life associated with Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. After graduating in 1835, he continued his studies at Yale, returning to Centre in 1837 to become professor of natural and physical science. In 1847 he became professor of mathematics, but in 1852 returned to his original position. In 1870 he was elected president of Centre, and professor of metaphysics.
